Breakdancing and three other sports have created the next move toward becoming medal events in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee’s executive board on Wednesday recommended adding breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and navigating to the Paris program once the complete membership meets in June.
A last decision has to be reached by the board in December 2020 after further observation of their four.
Also Wednesday, the IOC board agreed to continue helping North and South Korean athletes and officials work despite diplomatic setbacks between the neighboring governments in recent days.
Joint Korean clubs are being prepared in four sport to try to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and a co-hosting bidding for your 2032 Summer Games is a possible aim.
With those 2032 Olympics and also the 2030 Winter Games in your mind, a panel has been asked to look at ways of having an often costly and politically unpopular candidate process”more elastic and more concentrated.”
“The IOC can approach a city or a place and inform them,’Listen, isn’t it not a moment for you now?'” IOC President Thomas Bach said at a news conference following the second of three days of board meetings.
Creating the Olympic Games more affordable and responsive has become a key aim for Bach. He commended the four probable developments to the Paris trophy program as”more gender balanced, more young and more urban”
“These four sport also give the chance to connect with the young generation,” he explained.
Though breakdancing would be new in the Summer Games, another three are already supported for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics lineup.
All four sports will be assessed for how they’re handled, and the integrity of competitions and judging, prior to being finalized for Paris.
The IOC hosted a meeting of Korean government and sports officials in February, 1 year following the neighbours fielded a joint groups women’s ice hockey in the Pyeongchang Olympics hosted south of their boundary.
Last Friday, North Korea withdrew staff in the shared liaison office in its border town of Kaesong.
“We will try to keep our efforts there with a view to helping and assisting the athletes and the (national Olympic committees),” Bach said.
Combined Korean teams — in women’s basketball, women’s field hockey, mixed group judo, and men’s and women’s rowing — are planning to enter qualification this year to compete in Tokyo.
If a Korean bid stems from your 2032 Olympics, it could compete with applicants from Australia, India, Indonesia and Russia that have expressed early fascination.
Asked if plans to simplify Olympic bidding may observe the IOC strategy a favorite city, Bach stated it was”not our goal.”
“The Olympic Games are too big and too imperative that you could get an arrangement with a city,” he said.
The new panel of five IOC members, chaired by John Coates of Australia, aims to indicate ideas for the candidate process by the June 24-26 meeting of the complete membership in Lausanne.
